Programs in K-2
Evans River K-12 School implements a number of K - 2 programs to enable us to give our students the best possible learning experience and start to education.
Targeted Intervention Programs
At our school, we provide strong targeted intervention in Kindergarten to Year 2 to ensure every student is supported and challenged at their level. A team of specialised Learning and Support Teachers works alongside classroom teachers to identify and assist students who need extra help with literacy and numeracy, offering tailored support through small group or one-on-one sessions. At the same time, we recognise and extend high potential and gifted students through targeted enrichment and differentiated learning experiences. Our Assistant Principals, Curriculum and Instruction, lead this work by supporting teachers, analysing student data, and guiding evidence-based practices to meet the needs of every learner. This collaborative approach helps all students grow and succeed across the early years.
Personalised Learning Plans (PLPs)
At Evans River K-12 School, we are committed to meeting the individual learning needs of every student. Personalised Learning Plans (PLPs) are developed in collaboration with students, families, and teachers to support students who require additional guidance, adjustments, or enrichment in their learning. These plans outline clear goals, targeted strategies, and ongoing support to help each student thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. PLPs are regularly reviewed to ensure progress is monitored and success is celebrated.
Mathematics K-2
At our school, K–2 mathematics teaching follows the NSW Mathematics K–10 Syllabus, with a strong focus on daily number sense activities that build students’ confidence and fluency. Through hands-on, engaging learning experiences, our students explore foundational concepts in fun and meaningful ways. They develop strong numeracy skills by working with interactive activities and real-world problems, enjoying their learning every step of the way. Supported by the latest teaching resources and expert professional learning, our teachers deliver lessons that inspire curiosity and help every child thrive in their mathematical journey.
Decodable Readers
At Evans River K-12 School, we use decodable texts to support early reading development and improve fluency. These texts are carefully designed to align with students’ phonics knowledge, allowing them to apply what they’ve learned in structured, meaningful ways. By practising with decodable texts, students build confidence, accuracy, and automaticity—key components of fluent reading. This evidence-based approach helps lay strong foundations for lifelong literacy.
Systematic Synthetic Phonics program
Our K–2 team has had great success using a systematic synthetic phonics approach to teach children how to read and spell. This program breaks words down into sounds and teaches children how to match those sounds to letters in a clear, step-by-step way. It helps children learn to read by sounding out words and builds strong spelling skills at the same time. Because it’s taught in a consistent and structured way, all students can feel confident and supported.
Science Lab Lessons
Each week, our Kindergarten students visit the high school science lab, where a specialist science teacher leads hands-on, engaging activities using specialist equipment. They also have visits to the marine shed, enriching their learning with real-world science experiences.
Buddy program
Each Kindergarten student has a Year 6 buddy who warmly welcomes them and helps build their confidence as they start school. Through regular activities and friendly support, these buddies make the transition smoother and help create a caring school community from day one.
Our K–2 students take part in a range of educational experiences that support their learning. This may include visits to local places like the Evans Head Living Museum to connect what they learn in class with the world around them. Students also enjoy participating in visiting science shows, music and cultural performances, and author visits that help spark their interest and creativity. Year 2 students have the opportunity to attend day excursions to sites such as Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary and Marine Magic in Coffs Harbour, giving them hands-on learning opportunities. These experiences help make learning engaging and meaningful for your child.
