Waratah Award 7-12
The Waratah Award is an extracurricular program that any student can be part of. The aim of the award is to build the confidence, resilience, life skills and maturity of students involved.
The award comprises of five strands:
- Environmental Awareness and Action
- Goal Setting
- Outdoor Challenges
- Expeditions
- Volunteering
Each of these strands have a set of competencies which students aim to achieve. When students achieve all the competencies, they will receive the Waratah Award.
Range of Opportunities
Students are provided with a range of opportunities throughout the year at school and out of school to achieve these competencies. This includes incursions, day trips and overnight excursions.
Enrivonmental Awareness and Action
Students participate in activities that provide students hands-on opportunities to discover how flora and fauna are supported in our local area. These activities include visits to turtle sanctuaries, koala care centres and other activities such as clean up days and sea bird rescues.
Goal Setting
Students are challenged to reflect on their priorities and to set themselves personal goals that can involve personal ambitions, physical challenges or academic goals.
Outdoor Challenges
Students are encouraged to extend their comfort zone by participating in challenges that involve height such as high ropes courses and indoor rock climbing and water activities such as snorkeling and sea kayaking.
Expeditions
Students are provided with opportunities to plan and participate in single and multi-night camps. Trips include overnight canoe trips and bushwalking trips in National Parks of the north coast of NSW.
Volunteering
Students learn about the importance of volunteer organisations in society and are encouraged to seek opportunities to volunteer at school, in their local community and with national volunteer organisations.
